Tenant Story - A successful move-out
Luke came to us from a generous couple in our community. They learned that he was homeless and sleeping in a cemetery, having aged out of the foster care system with nowhere to go. They invited Luke to stay with them for several months until they learned about A Tiny Home for Good and reached out.
Here’s a text from the couple after a recent visit from Luke:
*Luke and his girlfriend just stopped by to say hello and to give us his updated contact info. He looks good and is upbeat about his future. We felt encouraged as he talked about his upcoming medical appointments and his plan to get a driver’s license.
He is, as you said, the most stable we’ve ever seen him. What a blessing it was that he spent the past two years with all of you at A Tiny Home for Good.
Thank you for all you have done with and for Luke.
Here’s an overview of the last two years Luke spent with A Tiny Home for Good.
Josh, our director of tenant services, was able to build a strong connection with Luke. Together, they were able to get Luke re-connected to social services, get utilities turned on in his name, and help him find and maintain employment.
Luke also identified that living close to his family mattered. So, when a tiny home in their neck of the woods opened up, Luke worked with our staff to move his life to the other side of town. The new location provided nearby employment options, a strong community of neighbors, and proximity to the places he loves.
Luke is a young guy with an old soul. Katie, our director of development, recalls a deep conversation during one of our tenant dinners last year where Luke expressed how desperately he wanted to be helpful to those who are struggling. With prior experience as a personal care aide, he knew he enjoyed that kind of work.
Fast forward a bit, Luke has worked as a caregiver at a local residential community for adults with intellectual disabilities for the last six months. He thrives in this environment.
Luke also met someone. For the last few months, he’s been splitting his time between his residence and his girlfriend’s. And last week he decided to move in with her full-time. He was ready two months ago, but Josh encouraged him to sit tight a little longer.
As an organization, we are equal parts happy and nervous for Luke. Sentiments that are shared by the couple who previously housed him. We are proud of his growth during his time with A Tiny Home for Good, that we were able to provide enough stability for him to find his footing. Many of our tenants are with us for the long haul and we consider that a success. But, Luke moving on, excited to start his next chapter? That’s success, too.
We wish him the best…and we know we’ll see him around because he’s part of this community. He’s finding his way.
